In Central Jersey Group III, the Freehold Colonials made their first state tournament appearance in three years a winning one as they defeated Northern Burlington High School, 51-43, at home on Feb. 27.  Trailing 20-15 at halftime, Freehold outscored the visitors 36-23 in the second half to secure the win in Freehold Borough.  Freehold’s Rebecca Cobb led all scorers with 15 points. Camerin Spahn added 12 points and Kim Dana scored 10 points for the winners.

In the quarterfinals, the Colonials ran into four-time defending sectional champion Neptune and Freehold’s playoff run came to an end with a 64-42 loss to the Scarlet Fliers. Cobb (16) and Dana (13) combined for 29 points in the loss.

Freehold is a young team that expects to return all but one player next winter. Getting some postseason experience was important for the team’s development. Coach Jen Brzucki’s girls finished the 2011-12 season with a 13-13 record.
