Sectional champion Colonials look to compete as they rebuild

FREEHOLD
Freehold High School provided one of the great moments in area high school girls basketball last winter when the Colonials captured the program’s first state sectional championship.
The historic win was even more special because the Colonials (23-6) beat state power Neptune High School, which had deprived the team once before in the finals and had been the team’s tormentor in recent years.
Freehold put all that baggage behind by winning a thrilling overtime game to capture the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group III championship.
The main goal for the 2013-14 Colonials, according to head coach Jen Brzucki, is “to be competitive as they rebuild.”
Freehold lost three cornerstones with the graduation of 1,000-point career scorers Kim Dana and Cameron Spahn, as well as Sara Cobb. All were four-year starters.
Rebecca Cobb, Sara’s younger sister, played a key role for Freehold last year, and she will be looking to shoulder more of the load this year. The junior center averaged 12.5 points per game and 7.9 rebounds a game. She is a true force in the paint area and can dominate the glass.
Another junior, two-guard Sophia Duffy, returns. She is a solid all-around player, averaging 5.8 points, 1.6 rebounds and 1.5 assists per contest.
Point guard Samantha Kandell and twoguard Erica Bastry also return. Kandell is the only senior in this group.
Newcomers expected to contribute are Julia Spencer (guard), Kayla Cassandra (forward), Jessica Yee (guard), Ciarra Terry- Fair (forward) and Sierra Strong (forward).
