Cougars’ boys, Colonials’ girls lead CJ basketball qualifiers
Colts Neck High School’s boys and Freehold High School’s girls lead the parade of area basketball teams that have automatically qualified for the NJSIAA tournament.
Teams had to be .500 or better after games played on Feb. 2 to qualify automatically for the state tournament that gets underway on Feb. 25.
Freehold’s girls had a breakthrough year last season when they made the post-season and have built on that this year. They are in the hunt for the B North Division, one game behind defending champion Neptune High School with one to play.
The Colonials split their two division games with the Scarlet Fliers. The victory was the biggest win for the program in several years. The Colonials were the first team to beat Middletown High School South this year, proving they will be a dangerous team come playoff time. Cameron Spahn (14.5 p.p.g.) and Rebecca Cobb (12.5 p.p.g.) are reliable scorers and rebounders. Cobb is pulling down 8.9 caroms a game and Spahn averages eight, placing them among the Shore’s leaders. Kim Dana is one of the top 3-point shooters in the Shore Conference (34).
The Colonials are third in power points in Central Jersey III.
