Freehold Borough is starting to come into its own as a team as everyone is finding a way to contribute.
All five girls on the floor have the ability to knock down the open jumper and it was Kim Dana and the Cobb sisters, Sara and Rebecca, who hit the big shots in the fourth quarter to help Freehold Borough, ranked No. 20 in The Star-Ledger Top 20, hold off Matawan for a 48-44 victory last night in Aberdeen.
"Everybody has the green light on my team," Freehold Borough coach Jennifer Brzucki said. "There's nobody I'm going to tell that they can't shoot. That's our goal to make everyone a scorer because when we score as a team, we're very hard to defend. Hopefully we keep that up."
After losing back-to-back games to Marlboro and Matawan, Freehold Borough has now won nine straight and did so with a balanced offense. Rebecca Cobb (six rebounds) scored 15 of her game-high 19 points in the first half, her sister Sara had eight points and seven rebounds and Dana finished with 13 points and five assists.
Freehold Borough shot 12-for-13 from the foul line.
"We've been playing more as a team and know where everyone is going to be," Rebecca Cobb said. "We're playing to our strengths."
Matawan trailed by nine at the half, but battled back as Lauren Postell (six rebounds) scored 10 of her 17 points and Montana Bertoli (three blocks) put in 12 of her 16 points in the second half to draw within 39-37 with 6:17 left in the fourth quarter.
Rebecca Cobb then pushed the lead to four with a jumper, and after a Bertolli bucket, Sara Cobb connected on back-to-back shots to make it 45-39 with 4:03 remaining.
Matawan got the ball inside more in the second half and Bertoli completed a three-point play to make it a three-point game, but Dana sealed it by going 4-for-4 from the foul line.
"Nobody is selfish," Dana said. "We're all just trying to get everybody involved. We usually have three girls score in double-digits every night and we try to share the ball as much as we can."
