Unger, Dana, Spahn top District girls basketball
Freehold High School’s run to the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group III championship highlighted a very strong year for girls basketball in the Freehold Regional High School District (FRHSD).
Jenn Brzucki’s Colonials made program history when they outlasted Neptune High School in double overtime, 50-48, to capture their first state sectional title. They were led by four-year starters Kim Dana, Camerin Spahn and Sara Cobb, who won just seven games as freshmen but improved each season, leading to a 23-6 mark and Central Jersey Group III crown in 2012-13. Dana and Spahn became 1,000-career point scorers along the way.
Marlboro’s Nicole Shatsky heads the Second Team, which includes Freehold’s Rebecca Cobb, Freehold Township’s Victoria Wagner, Colts Neck’s Jessie Fifield and Manalapan’s Danielle Rizzo.
Dana and Spahn were a perfect combination. They were the heart and soul of the Colonials, and their will to win carried the club to its memorable state sectional championship.
Dana was the team’s 3-point threat, hitting 60 during the course of the season. She made timely threes in Freehold’s come-from-behind win against Neptune. The point guard averaged 2.6 assists and led the team in steals (49). She finished her career with 1,095 points, averaging 10.8 this winter. Spahn kept statisticians on their toes because she could do everything for the Colonials. She led the team in scoring (13.3 points per game), rebounding (8.2), assists (3.5) and blocked shots (1.1). She made the two biggest free throws of her career when she hit the game winner in the final 10 seconds against Neptune. Spahn, who will be playing college basketball at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, scored 1,046 points in her Colonials career.
The Shore Conference Coaches put both Dana and Spahn on the All-B North Division First Team.
Cobb, a sophomore, really blossomed this year under the tutelage of seniors Dana, Spahn and her sister Sara. Rebecca was second on the team in scoring (12.6 points per game) and rebounding (7.9). Look for those numbers to go up next year.
Student-athletes who have earned All- FRHSD honorable mention recognition for their performances during the 2012-13 season are Kaity Healy of Colts Neck, Sara Cobb of Freehold, Ryan Jackson of Freehold Township, Allie Moreland of Howell and Sam Meier of Manalapan.
