Girls: RBC, Holmdel Win; Vianney’s Streak Ends; Freehold’s Hot Start
A very long, impressive winning streak is over at St. John Vianney, Red Bank Catholic is at the top of arguably the toughest division in all of New Jersey and the top 10, which will have a new version on Saturday, is about to get a real workout.
1. RBC is in control of Class A Central: It’s been a while since anyone but St. John Vianney was atop that division, but thanks to a variety of reasons, the Caseys are the lone unbeaten team there. They have gotten to this point in large part to defense and just enough offense on most nights. This is not Joe Montano’s most talented group, but they’re definitely workers from all indications and they act well as a unit. Tuesday opened a key stretch of games that will include Neptune on Saturday, St. John Vianney on Tuesday, Manasquan next Thursday and Jackson Memorial next Saturday.
2. 66-game divisional winning streak: Not only had Vianney won that many games dating back to Dec. 15, 2007, but it had done it against a division that is widely regarded as one of, if not the best collection of teams in the state. Once it became clear that Kat Egan was done for the season, that winning streak was in jeopardy. On Tuesday, the Lancers ran into a pretty good Holmdel team and the streak is done.
The Lancers have now lost three of four, Emily Uribe is on the shelf for roughly 7-10 days with a high ankle sprain and the schedule is not exactly going to help with Christ The King paying a visit to Northern Monmouth County on Saturday evening.
3. Freehold is 7-1: Not only are the Colonials 7-1, but the one loss was to Neptune, 54-50, in the opener in a game they had control of until late. More than one coach has tried to talk us into the fact this Freehold team is better than Neptune, with or without Lorena Hubbard eligible. That remains to be seen, but the 7-1 with that one loss cannot be ignored.
4. The top 10: For the first time this season, the top 10 is going to get a serious makeover. No. 1 went down for the third time in four games on Tuesday, No. 4 beat No. 3 on Tuesday and there are few unranked teams that have a case to come in for the first time, or even back in after getting dropped out.
Contrary to popular belief, there is no ‘correct’ answer to the poll right now, nor is there ever for that matter. It only gets more muddled after a week like this, but isn’t that half the fun anyway?
