Freehold hands Middletown South its first loss of season

Middletown South’s undefeated season hung in the balance on a last second layup that rattled out resulting in a 40-39 upset at the hands of Freehold.
With the loss the Eagles’ record falls to an impressive 11-1 while the Colonials improve to a 9-3 mark that coach Jennifer Brzucki hopes will help right the Freehold ship.
“This is a huge win for us,” said Brzucki. “It’s very uplifting. The girls are excited, as are the coaches. It wasn’t easty opening up against Neptune, and we recently wnet through losses to Matawan and Marlboro, so hopefully this win will lead to a tempo change that gets us back on track.”
Freehold sophomore Rebecca Cobb led the way for the Colonials recording a double-double with 18 points, including 10 in the third quarter, and 10 rebounds.
“Rebecca Cobb was huge for us tonight,” explained Brsucki. “She hit a lot of nice baseline jumpers, and a pair of big free throws. She’s growing into her body and will only get better.”
The Colonials’ Camerin Spahn added five rebounds, three assists, and a block to her 14 points, including six of Freehold’s 11 fourth quarter points. Middletown South’s Jackie Dluhi led all Eagles scorers with 12 points, half of which came from beyond the arc.

“We needed that”: That was the text message from Middletown South head coach Tom Brennan, after his Eagles, previously unbeaten and ranked No. 3 in the Asbury Park Press Top 10, feel to a dangerous Freehold team, 40-39.
The Eagles had strummed along nicely, including two wins in 12 days over a Holmdel team that owns wins over St. John Vianney and Rumson-Fair Haven. Now, they have a loss against team they could see down the road in Central Jersey Group III.
As for Freehold, its claim to fame was taking Neptune to the limit before losing by four in its opener back on Dec. 14. With a win over a quality team like Middletown South, they can justify their record and cement themselves as a team that cannot be taken lightly.
